We have this strange front room in our house.  You know the one that used to be a formal living room when people had formal living rooms, but is now open to the family room.  Our computer lives there along with a file cabinet, a random loveseat and a couple of bookcases that have seen better days and serve no real storage function.

Well, turns out that I’m spending an awful lot of time in said sad room.  It’s driving me nuts.  What I want this room to be when it grows up is a multifunction office/homework/reading area.  Is that too much to ask?

So, what’s a girl to do?  Start looking through photos of other people’s offices and get some inspiration.  I’ve decided that I need built ins.  Or at least I’ll start there…

So, here are a few options.

The small desk for the laptop is nice, but…

I really love the desk floating out in the room.  Maybe I could mix both ideas.

What about the shelves themselves?  Could I go with adjustable shelves that are all different heights, but allow for the utmost flexibility?

Or do I go with fixed perfectly symmetrical shelves?  Who am I kidding?  I am totally symmetrical, no doubt about it!  If you know me at all, you’re laughing out loud that I even thought of mismatched shelf heights!

Finally, the finish, I love the dark finish here with the grass cloth back so much.  But, ultimately, I think I will go with a light finish, because this room gets very little natural light.  But I will definitely keep that grasscloth in mind!

Thanks for  indulging my built in ramblings!  Love to hear what you think.  Do you have built ins in your home?  Love them?  Hate them?

  1. Oh how I already miss the built-ins from our last house. I wish I could build in some here but no go in a rental. Looks like free standers for me.
I definitely say go for it! And I love the grass cloth back idea!
