So, have you done it yet?  Have you lugged out all of the boxes, lights and glitter covered goodies?  I’ll be honest, I haven’t, but the plans are falling into place.  As I looked over all of my Christmas decorations this year, it occurred to me that I really don’t love everything that I have anymore.  Now, don’t get me wrong, the ornaments that we’ve collected throughout the years and especially the ones that my girls have made for me will always be favorites, but my overall style has changed.  Of course, it would be great to go out and buy all new things, but that’s not going to happen.  So, what’s a frustrated decorator to do?  Simplify!

I read a fabulous post on Apartment Therapy yesterday about freshening up your space.  Even though, they weren’t talking specifically about the holidays, I think it applies to all aspects of home decorating.  Sarah of Apartment Therapy wrote, “Organize what you have; a clean, organized home is halfway there. Clutter is the first enemy of a peaceful, inspiring space.”  This is so true.  I don’t need a lot of new holiday decor, I need to organize and declutter what I have.  Then, if I feel the need to buy something, I’ll have a clear understanding of what I need and where it will be placed in my home and the old decorations will feel fresh and new again.  The unwanted decor can be donated to someone who would love to have it.

What do you think?  Do you love all of your Christmas decor?  Do you pull it out every year and think to yourself, boy, I wish I had this or that?  Why not declutter and donate your decorations to a children’s home or retirement center?  That’s my plan this year.  What’s yours?

  1. Love this post because I can completely relate. My decorations are up, but I kept it really simple this year. I didn’t want lots of clutter. It still turned out really beautiful (I think) and I only used about half of what I already had. I feel so much better now! 😉

  2. I love most of my cmas decor this year. We did a big addition last year and had to clean out our garage (that included Christmas). I swore before it all went back into the garage, I would go though EVERY bin. And I did!! I weeded out so much of that Christmas decor that I never used. This year, nearly all of it is up!! It was daunting task, but one that paid off!!

  3. I don’t have a ton of decorations but I’ve already thought about the entire editing process. I also don’t have a ton of surface area to work with, so editing is extremely important especially with my sweet little toddler. I’m going to try using what I have first and then will buy items as I see fit. But I’d like to keep it wallet friendly.

  4. I love that picture from countryliving! I think I pinned it a few weeks ago onto 4 boards 🙂 I had these same thought last weekend when I pulled out the dreaded bins. Now with all these people living under one roof here, I have to donate and really get rid of decorations I’ve had since I bought my first house 12 years ago! You know, the stuff from when you graduated college and thought were so fantastic…..now I’m like, omg you need to go! 🙂 I think I’ll toss everything this year and then I’ll have to buy new next year! ha JK 🙂
