One simple (and easy) way to update your holiday decor

via countryliving.com

So, have you done it yet?  Have you lugged out all of the boxes, lights and glitter covered goodies?  I’ll be honest, I haven’t, but the plans are falling into place.  As I looked over all of my Christmas decorations this year, it occurred to me that I really don’t love everything that I have anymore.  Now, don’t get me wrong, the ornaments that we’ve collected throughout the years and especially the ones that my girls have made for me will always be favorites, but my overall style has changed.  Of course, it would be great to go out and buy all new things, but that’s not going to happen.  So, what’s a frustrated decorator to do?  Simplify!

I read a fabulous post on Apartment Therapy yesterday about freshening up your space.  Even though, they weren’t talking specifically about the holidays, I think it applies to all aspects of home decorating.  Sarah of Apartment Therapy wrote, “Organize what you have; a clean, organized home is halfway there. Clutter is the first enemy of a peaceful, inspiring space.”  This is so true.  I don’t need a lot of new holiday decor, I need to organize and declutter what I have.  Then, if I feel the need to buy something, I’ll have a clear understanding of what I need and where it will be placed in my home and the old decorations will feel fresh and new again.  The unwanted decor can be donated to someone who would love to have it.

What do you think?  Do you love all of your Christmas decor?  Do you pull it out every year and think to yourself, boy, I wish I had this or that?  Why not declutter and donate your decorations to a children’s home or retirement center?  That’s my plan this year.  What’s yours?

Thanksgiving in Ohio and a trip to Beaver Creek State Park

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend.  We traveled to Ohio to visit with Eric’s parents and even though it was a quick trip, the weather was beautiful and we all had a great time.  Here are some of the highlights from our trip.  Wednesday, I’ll be back to design posts. Maybe even something Christmasy? (Is that a word?)  Oh well, enjoy the family pics and I’ll see you on Wednesday!

Charlotte loves to swing!

Kate's choice is the monkey bars.

Friday we spent the day at Beaver Creek State Park. What a beautiful place!

This is the old schoolhouse from the 1800's. The girls were amazed that kids really had class here.

The girls learning the skip stones. Lucy would have been in that freezing water in a heartbeat if I had let go of the leash.

Charlotte was most interested in how seashells got to a little creek in Ohio.

A view down the creek.

Looking up...

Loved this huge tree!  We have to remember the tripod next time, so Eric can get in the pic!

It was a good day.  Hope yours is too.  Thanks for indulging me today.  Aren’t they the cutest?  How’d you spend your weekend?  Love to hear about it. 🙂
